More Local Control For Municipal Planning Decisions

As of Tuesday, it’s now tougher to appeal city zoning decisions.

Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Mauro says the Ontario Municipal Board has now been replaced with the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal.

Mauro says the new body puts planning decisions squarely in the hands of locally elected officials, without fearing they could be easily overturned.

He notes if an appeal is to be successful it would have to prove the city somehow went against a community’s official plan or provincial planning policies.

Mauro believes the new system will streamline the zoning application process and will be pretty much “bulletproof.”
