Provincial Police are concerned about a steady increase in “move over” charges.
Police say the numbers have gone up each year over the past five years, a clear sign that many drivers still fail to consider the well-being of roadside emergency workers and tow truck drivers.
In 2016, the OPP laid more than 2,400 charges, an increase of 393 over 2015.
Last year, there were at least eleven incidents in which an OPP vehicle was stopped on the roadside and was struck from behind while its emergency lights were activated.
The law carries a $400 to $2,000 fine, plus three demerit points for first time offenders.
