Multiple Partners Work To Expand Ignace Community Garden

The Community Garden project in Ignace continues to grow.

The Mary Berglund Health Centre has been working with area schools, volunteers and partners to expand on locally grown food, plants and vegetation and wildlife at the garden.

The focus has been on local food security and bringing the community together.

Health Promoter Yvonne Romas says developing the area has been a real eye opener for everyone involved.

Romas says kids of all ages have learned more about soil conditions, plants, taking care of animals, the importance of bees and the work needed to get food on the table.

Volunteers have built a Chicken Coop, the Grade 9 class is building a Rabbit Hutch, and the high school manufacturing class is designing and constructing the aquaponics.

The grade 1/2 class is raising bunnies, the grade 5/6 class is incubating eggs, and area schools will be visiting the garden Tuesday and Wednesday to meet the new chicks and bunnies.

Romas says they look forward to adding a Greenhouse and progressive compost bins.

The Dryden Rotary Charity Foundation has been able to financially support the Community Garden.
