The Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation in Northwestern Ontario
is calling on the Federal Government to issue a formal apology to
residential school survivors.
Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice stated Monday that a deal worth $1.9-billion
in compensation will not include an apology.
Stan Beardy says the formal recognition of wrong-doing by Canada
should warrant more than a compensation package and notes it would bring
closure to the long-standing issue.
Some 5,000 NAN members attended residential schools.
