The Grand Chief for the Nishnawbe Aski Nation says right now Canada has two completely different health care systems.
Alvin Fiddler says young children are dying from treatable and preventable ailments and their communities continue to face a suicide crisis.
Fiddler notes the Auditor General has confirmed their findings.
He says the resources First Nations receive aren’t based on their needs and are instead based on some arbitrary formula out of Ottawa.
Fiddler adds health care decisions need to be made at the community level and with input from all First Nations, giving them control over health care programs, systems and delivery.
NAN is planning a Health Care Summit this Fall and Fiddler is hoping to work with both levels of government on a concrete plan for First Nations.
Fiddler says they plan to establish a Chiefs Committee to help in the development of a Health Transformation Plan.
