NAN To Discuss Infrastructure, Youth Suicide And Seasonal Roads With Three Provincial Ministers

Nishnawbe Aski Nation Chiefs are scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon with the Minister’s of Natural Resources, Northern Development and Aboriginal Affairs.

Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says they look forward to an open discussion with Bill Mauro, Michael Gravelle and David Zimmer.

Infrastructure and addressing the delay in opening the winter road network will be among the topics discussed.

Fiddler hopes to spur talk on proceeding with major projects, including proceeding with an all-weather road linking the north.

He notes many First Nations communities rely on seasonal roads to ensure supplies arrive before the spring and summer.

Meantime, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation is working on a strategy to reduce youth suicides in their communities.

Fiddler says in the past two years, NAN communities have seen two 10-year-old’s take their own lives and that needs to change.

He stresses a seamless mental health support system is needed.
