NAN Upset With Bill Mapping Land in Far North

The Nishnawbe-Aski Nation is not supporting a bill to map land in the Far North, saying they feel left out of the consultation
process.
Grand Chief Stan Beardy is also asking for the withdrawal of the proposed act unless four key changes are made to allow more
participation by their communities.
Beardy also says he’s feeling snubbed by the timing of the consultations, which are happening at the same time of the NAN Chiefs Assembly.
Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield introduced the bill in June, promising it would protect conservation areas.
The government also said there would be a community-based land use planning process that would identify areas where development can take place and benefit First Nations.
Cansfield denies the government is trying to leave anyone out of the talks and notes there will be several rounds of consultations
before the bill is nailed down.
