Crolancia Public School in Pickle Lake has received national recognition.
It has been named the first Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Legacy School in Canada.
Principal Holly Szumowski says it’s an opportunity for them as a school to help in the movement to raise awareness of the history and impact of the Residential School system on Indigenous people.
Szumowski says being named the first legacy school is a great honour for their small and little school and for the town of Pickle Lake.
Szumowski has also announced the dedication of two benches outside of the school, the dedication of the school’s Native as a Second Language (NSL) classroom as the Legacy Classroom, and the renaming of the school’s end of year NSL award as the Charlie Wenjack Award.
She also says one of their previous teachers Harriet Visitor was Chanie Wenjack’s niece, and she originally showed the school the work the organization does.
