The NDP is once again calling for the resignation of the Minister of Long Term Care.
Leader Andrea Horwath says a report released last week indicates over 75% of deaths in the province due to COVID-19 took place in long term care facilities.
“The Minister either failed to protect seniors or was prevented from doing so. Either way this Minister should resign and my question is when will she?”
However, Merrillee Fullerton says they are doing everything possible to address year’s of mismanagement.
“For 15 years you had the opportunity, you had opportunities to shore up long term care and you chose not to act. Our government has created a stand alone Ministry, we are working with other Ministries, working across government.”
Fullerton adds “We have been actively looking just to shore up staffing using measures through the Ministry of Health as the lead on staffing. Understanding the report that was provided by our expert panel, many of those measures are underway.”
An interim report last week suggested the Ford government did not include the long term care system when it made its initial COVID-19 plans.
It also called on the province to increase the number of personal support workers.
