The New Democrats say the Government is hampering economic recovery in Northern Ontario cities by refusing to unlock
wood supplies.
Gilles Bisson wants to know why the government refused to step in to give the town of Smooth Rock Falls, north of Timmins, the wood it needed to bring a new mill into production.
He says that after the closure of a Tembec plant the community developed its own plan for a new multi-use mill that would have created new jobs and boosted the struggling economy.
The government has said it never received a request for supplies and declined to step in, which means the town could lose the $55-million in investments it raised.
Northern Development and Forestry Minister Michael Gravelle, who has since taken over the file, says he will meet with the mayor of Smooth Rock Falls to discuss the issue.
