NDP urge help for forest sector amid new duties

The provincial government is being asked to take action on new duties on Canadian softwood by the United States.

The duties amount to 34.45 percent and more are expected by November.

The Kenora-Rainy River Riding Association of the NDP is asking the MPP, Greg Rickford to take urgent and coordinated action.

The New Democrats are calling the government to make sure all new houses built in Ontario use Ontario wood.

The creation of a task force on the forest industry is also recommended.

Also, the NDP want the government to work with First Nations on forestry plans, stewardship and economic development.

Finally, they want income, and transition supports for workers affected by mill closures due to the high duties.
