Some tough times ahead for the city of Oshawa with the news the GM plant is closing, putting about 3,000 workers out of a job.
In the legislature, the NDP hammered away at the government for seemly doing nothing to help, but Premier Ford says company officials have told him “the ship has left the dock.”
“The leader of the opposition is demanding we spend billions and billions of dollars, to a company that doesn’t want it,” says Ford.
“They’re gone. They’re done. They told me straight up, there’s nothing we can do.”
The Premier says he has spoken to the Prime Minister to try and find ways to help affected workers through the employment insurance system.
“We’re asking for a series of changes to the employment insurance eligibility, similar to what has been done in the past for the forest industry and the oil patch.”
GM has indicated it plans to close the Oshawa assembly plant sometime in 2019.
It currently manufactures Impalas and the Cadillac XTS.
