New federal Regional Assessment in development

The development of a new federal Regional Assessment for the Ring of Fire is underway.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada says it is working with Indigenous groups on a co-led process.

It replaces one that was dismissed by area First Nation leaders as being too narrow in its scope.

Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault met with area First Nation leaders in January, promising a different model.

The Agency and Indigenous representatives are now co-developing the draft Terms of Reference.

Funding is being made available for individuals and groups interested in providing input.

Those interested have to forward applications by June 23.

The Agency says the two virtual public information sessions are also planned.

They are scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern time and on Thursday, June 22, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.

More details and how to take part can be found on the regional assessment’s home page on the Registry.
