New Laws In Place

A rash of new laws took effect in Ontario on January 1st.
The biggest being new smoking bans.
People can no longer light up on bar and restaurant patios, playgrounds, or at sports venues.
Retailers meanwhile can no longer sell tobacco products on post secondary campuses.
On another front, drivers will be paying more for licence plates.
General plates are up $5 to $20, while personalization will cost you $310.
Changes to building code require multi-unit buildings to include smoke and fire alarms with visual elements to alert people with hearing impairments.
It will also improve accessibility in multi-unit spaces by requiring power doors in shared spaces such as parking lots and common rooms.
Another new law includes reporting estate assets to the Ministry of Finance after a person passes away.
Reports need to be filed within 30 days.
There is also a new gender diversity law for public companies.
They are now required to disclose the number of women on the board or in executive officer positions, along with policies regarding hiring and contract renewal processes.
