New Program To Help End Violence Against Women

A new program is up and running in Sioux Lookout with the goal of ending violent behaviour in families and communities.

The local Warrior Against Violence program works with men struggling with anger and domestic violence issues.

Mental Health worker David Segerts is facilitating the six-month program and he says the ultimate goal is creating healthier and safer communities and families.

Segerts says the program uses traditional values and beliefs of equality, honour and respect to help First Nations men.

He notes they will be addressing their issues one-on-one and in group settings.

The program originated in Vancouver in the early 90’s and has helped reduce the number of violent incidents.

The first meeting is Tuesday night at 7 at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre

The program is open to any First Nations male over the age of 18.
