New Rules For The Rail Industry

New federal rules impacting the rail industry have now passed into law.

Amendments to the Canada Transportation Act include a new shipper-financed fund to compensate victims and pay for the clean-up in the event of a derailment involving oil trains.

Railway companies must also carry minimum levels of insurance.

The Federal government and rail inspectors also have broader powers to take measures or stop activity for safety reasons.
