New Study Released About Health of Grassy Narrows Residents

Yet another study of the Grassy Narrows First Nation.

The community wellness survey was conducted last year and involved about 80 percent of community members.

The report shows that mercury continues to have a devastaing impact on the health of community members, both physically and mentally.

It finds that Grassy residents who have been diagnosed with mercury poisoning are up to six times more likely to suffer from a wide range of debilitating health problems.

Only 21 percent of respondants also decribed their health as being good, compared to 40 percent for the average first nation community in Ontario, and 60 percent for the general population.

It shows Grassy has a proportionally smaller elder population than most other first nations, due to premature death.

The study was done in part by Health Canada and researcher Donna Mergler from the University of Quebec at Montreal.
