New Transmission Line Now Online In Northern Ontario

The East-West Tie line is now active.

It’s a new 230-kilovolt transmission line from Wawa to Thunder Bay.

Energy Minister Todd Smith says it will be a boost to the region’s economy.

Smith says it is a 450 kilometre line that will provide a consistent supply of electricity to support economic growth, job creation and resource development in the northwest.

He notes First Nations have already benefited.

“These are great opportunities for many Indigenous people to work on that project. As a matter of a fact a good percentage of those who worked on that project were from local Indigenous communities. So a great success story.”

The planning for a similar line going west of Thunder Bay to Atikokan and Dryden is currently in the planning stages.
