No West Nile Virus in Northwestern Ontario

Like their counterparts in Manitoba, the Northwestern Health Unit is encouraging local residents to bring in dead birds to test for the possibility of West Nile Virus.
The potentially-fatal disease which is transmitted by mosquitos, has been identified in a dead crow in the Winnipeg area, and Bill Limerick of the Health Unit says the publicity surrounding that situation has prompted more people to bring in birds in recent days.
Limerick stresses the risk of contracting West Nile Virus is quite small.
There has been only one confirmed case of a human contracting the virus in North America this year.
Limerick is also urging people to use common sense in minimizing their contact with mosquitos.
