Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association President Dave Canfield says the proposed Trans Canada pipeline would have several benefits.
Canfield says the project makes sense as it would use an existing line and create jobs.
He adds that pipelines are far safer to transport oil then road or rail.
The Energy East Pipeline project would ship Alberta crude oil to the east coast.
Canfield stresses any proposed line shouldn’t interfere with local watersheds.
He says Trans Canada must ensure that the environment remains protected.
Canfield adds he wants to see the pipeline have automatic shut off valves if a leak is detected.
Trans Canada is holding information sessions across the northwest this week.
The last session is Thursday in Ignace from 4-8 at the Northwoods Inn.
