NOMA Would Support 1% HST Increase

The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association is supporting a plan to raise the Harmonized Sales Tax by 1%.

The idea was floated at the Association of Municipalities Conference in Ottawa last week, however is being dismissed by Premier Kathleen Wynne.

NOMA President Wendy Landry believes a hike to the HST is the best way of dealing with a significant infrastructure funding gap.

Landry notes the government has no answers on how to cover a $4.9-billion infrastructure shortfall, noting AMO is simply offering a solution.
