Northern Institute Promoting A Circular Economy

There are efforts to grow the circular economy in northern Ontario.

A symposium was held last week to talk about how to increase the use of waste from the forest and mining industries.

Charles Cirtwell is president of the Northern Policy Institute and says they have a vision about how the circular economy could benefit the region.

“We’ll be working to develop a shared vision for a circular economy for northern Ontario,” says Cirtwell.

“We plan to launch our community outreach in February, with the goal of having a preliminary vision to share with our regions by late May. It not like this is a brand new idea nor is it like anybody in northern Ontario is not working on the issues.”

Cirtwell says the forest industry has done a good job of recycling wood waste into other products but more can be done.

He adds the circular economy not only creates jobs but is good for the environment because there is less waste from extraction industries.
