Since 2011, more than 160-family physicians educated by the Northern Ontario School of Medicine have started to practice in northern Ontario.
That’s according to a new report released by the school.
Dean Dr. Roger Strasser says roughly 190,000 residents have improved access to a family doctor thanks to their presence.
Strasser notes 94% of graduates who have completed both their MD and residency programs are now practising in northern Ontario.
Strasser notes they have collaborated with more than 90-communities in the north to provide education across the region.
He adds that they have graduated 123-Registered Dietitians, roughly 90 of whom are working in rural, northern or remote communities.
Strasser stresses they still have work to do, acknowledging that some small communities and First Nations continue to struggle to maintain medical services.
