Northwest A Leader In Organ Donations

Northwestern Ontario is a leader when it comes to organ donations and transplants.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network says the registration rate in our area in 2019 was 43%, compared to 34% for the entire province.

Chief Executive Officer Ronnie Gavsie says the ultimate goal is a 51% registration rate.

Ontario did set record highs last year.

There were more than 1,386 organ transplants and 684 deceased and living organ donors, which is a 13% increase over 2018.

Gavsie says this region is a great example for the rest of the province.

She credits the rise in registration rates to public awareness campaigns, news coverage as well as heavy participation and willingness of hospitals to work with the Network.

She notes it’s so easy to become a donor, stressing “If families do not consent, no lives will be saved. The biggest driver of family consent is the knowledge that their loved one wished to be a donor and had registered consent.”
