Northwestern Health Unit Student Survey

Still plenty of work to do in ensuring area High School students maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The Northwestern Health Unit is out with the results of a school health survey.
Health Promoter Stephanie Cran says they were trying to gauge where they stand in their programming.
The survey found that 43% of students drink alcohol at least once a month and one-third of students used marijuana in the past year.
Roughly 28% of High School students in the Kenora and Rainy River District are classified as overweight or obese.
52% of High School students in the region are getting 60-minutes of physical activity every day of the week.
The survey also found that about 12% of students are smokers, while nearly 1 in 5 Grade 12 students smoke.
Cran says 6 High Schools participated in the survey and they received assistance from the University of Waterloo.
She notes the information gathered will help the Health Unit measure key objectives outlined in its strategic plan.
