Northwestern Health Unit Supports Trans Fat Ban

A nutritionist with the Northwestern Health Unit is welcoming Canada’s ban on trans fats.

Any food produced after September 17th can no longer contain partially hydrogenated oils.

Julie Slack says trans fats are a very unhealthy and increase the risk of heart disease.

Slack says you may still find food with trans fat as Health Canada is giving industry two years to have food produced before the deadline to be sold.

She would have liked to see a more immediate ban but notes it’s a step in the right direction.

Slack notes it means the need to continue educating the public about trans fats.

Slack says trans fats are mostly found in processed food and pre-packaged baked goods to help improve texture and extend shelve live.
