NOSM Closer To Becoming Stand-Alone University

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is nearing the finish line in its quest to become Canada’s first stand-alone medical university.

Dean, President and CEO Dr. Sarita Verma says they are just waiting for the stamp of approval from the government.

“We’re just waiting for the proclamation and support. The consultation period by the government on the regulations ended on December 2 and no make shake-up.”

She adds, “We expect that there will be a proclamation as soon as the new year, and the cabinet puts it on their agenda, and I would expect that NOSM University will be proclaimed before the end of January next year.

Dr. Verma stresses the school will continue to emphasize a primary mandate to addressing the region’s health-care gaps and needs.
