New statistics show almost half of Ontario’s jails are holding more people than they were designed for.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections shows that almost half of the province’s jails hold more prisoners than they are designed for.
Here in Northwestern Ontario, Dryden Police Inspector Kevin Glenister says it’s not that surprising. Dryden Police send majority of their prisoners to the Kenora jail, and Glenister says in the 30-years he’s been with the Police Service, he doesn’t recall any major changes or upgrades to the facility.
However one thing that has changed is where young-offenders go.
Glenister says the youth facility inside the prison has been closed, which opens up more cells for adult offenders. Youth are now placed either at another facility in Kenora, or sent to the Young Offender jails in Fort Frances, Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie.
The Kenora Jail has about 105-prisoners, Fort Frances has about 32, Thunder Bay has about 132 and Sault Ste. Marie has about 104.
