Number of fires and hazard increases

Not a good long weekend on the forest fire front, with a dozen new fires cropping up.

This brings the number of active fires in the region to 49, a third of which are not under control.

This comes as the fire hazard sits predominantly in the high to extreme in the Dryden, Thunder Bay and northern areas, with a bank of medium with low spots in the Kenora, Fort Frances, Atikokan, and Armstrong areas.

So far this year there have been a total of 237 fires in the region burning almost a quarter of a million hectares.
