Occupations Policy Now Needed

Ontario police forces are now being told they must have a policy in place regarding aboriginal occupations.
The directive comes from the Ministry of Correctional Services and Community Safety.
Dryden Police Chief Rob Davis the requirement was a recommendation in the Ipperwash inquiry.
He says he’s pleased to see some action following the 1995 crisis.
Davis suggests recent occupations involving non-aboriginals probably sparked the move.
Davis says he feels it’s best to have a blanket policy covering all occupations and notes it’s always good to be prepared for the worst.
He stresses it forces them to look forward to deal with such situations.
