We now have a date for when Canadians can legally smoke pot recreationally.
The Trudeau government announced Wednesday that recreational cannabis will be legal in Canada starting on October 17th of this year, which is more than three months after the government’s original deadline of July 1st.
This announcement comes after the Senate vote on Tuesday night to pass the latest version of the long-debated legislation to legalize recreational pot.
Health minister Ginette Petipas Taylor says this historic legislation will end prohibition and replace it with a sensible, responsible and equitable cannabis policy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the provinces and territories have told the federal government they need 8 to 12 weeks as a buffer period between when the bill gets royal assent and when the new laws go into effect.
