Olive Althea Warren

Olive passed away at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, from a heart attack, following an aneurysm operation. Olive was born in Beersville, New Brunswick on March 16, 1934 to Mary and Joseph Little. She had 3 older brothers, 2 older sisters and 4 younger sisters. She grew up close to her sisters and trying hard at everything she did, she hardly ever came in second place. It was in 1952 that she met Emerson Warren on a double date; he was her friend’s date. She took quite a shine to Emerson and on October 15, 1953, they were married in Shediac, NB with the minister and his wife attending. Starting their large family immediately, having 5 daughters and one son. In 1962 her nephew was born and needed a home. With two other babies at home Mom and Dad went and picked the baby up. For his 13th birthday, they legally adopted him. Dad and Mom took their first trip out west in 1957 to Pincher Creek, Alberta. They worked on his Uncle Clarence’s ranch for a few months and headed back to New Brunswick. In the early 60’s Mom helped Dad by cooking at camps for Dad and his hired help. When not at camp she helped run their farm and raise her family. In 1966, with not a lot of work in New Brunswick, Mom and Dad had to move their family to Ontario. Living in a few small rental houses for a year, they were finally able to purchase a home on Meadows Road in Barclay. Mom started working at the Tree Nursery shortly after moving to Dryden. In the late 60’s Mom started waitressing at the Central Hotel Restaurant. In 1969, their large family made room for one more as Mom and Dad decided to raise their granddaughter as their own. With 8 kids in total, car trips to New Brunswick in a Pontiac was more than eventful. Thank goodness seat belts weren’t mandatory back then. During the 70’s our family was very close adding son-in-laws and grandchildren. Every Sunday was like Christmas day; big card games and lots to feed. In the mid 70’s Mom moved from the restaurant to the Men’s Bar at the Central. In 1981 the unthinkable happened: their son Marvin was killed in a car accident at the age of 19.It wasn’t long before Mom’s back and her health warranted early retirement. At approximately the same time Dad had to take long-term Disability. This only enhanced the closeness this couple shared. Mom and Dad travelled to the east and west coasts visiting family and friends. Their weekly crib games were something they both looked forward to. Every morning was started with Dad making her a pot of tea and three games of crib. Mom had a long road ahead of her with Dad’s health failing with strokes and Alzheimer’s disease. She was a very strong woman keeping so much to her, so she wouldn’t burden anyone with their health problems. In 1999 Mom had to admit Dad into the hospital as his Alzheimer’s had progressed beyond her capabilities. Two months later she had to finally put him into a home. This was very hard on Mom and the whole family. Mom continued to play at crib parties, but sorely missed having her partner with her. She was very active with the Legion and Ladies auxiliary. Travelling was still something Mom liked to do and continued to take her grandchildren on trips as her and Dad had in the past. She usually spent Christmas at her oldest daughter’s in B.C. In 2001 and again in 2002, Mom made special trips back to New Brunswick to be with two of her sisters as they lost their battles to cancer. She lost her best friend in January of 2003 when her husband Emerson passed away after having hip surgery and a stroke. We are thankful that she was able to attend her family reunion this past summer to see relatives and friends that she hadn’t seen in a long time. Mom’s heart was failing slowly and on November 20th an aneurysm in her stomach ruptured sending her to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. She had a battle in front of her to which we all thought she would overcome. On Monday night, Mom went into Cardiac arrest to which there wasn’t anything to be done.
