Ontario has had nearly three times as many forest fires so far this season compared to this time last year according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
Information Officer Chris Marchand says the entire province has seen 942 fires to date, compared to 300 at the same time last year.
In the Northwest Region, Marchand says we have recorded 522 active fires.
420 have sparked in northeastern Ontario.
Marchand notes it’s because of relatively little rain across the province as well as thousands of lightning strikes.
He is hesitant to say whether we’ll continue to see fires pop up as quickly as they have been.
Marchand notes the ten year average is about 540 fires.
