The provincial government is taking steps to improve staffing issues and inmate safety at Ontario’s correctional facilities.
The Liberals have announced plans to hire 2,000 jail guards over the next three years.
Officials note the move will help enhance access to rehabilitation and reintegration programming and will strengthen mental health supports.
The staff additions come over three months after a riot and hostage taking at the Thunder Bay District Jail.
