Ontario Involved In Task Force To Eliminate Diesel Fuel

Ontario is participating in a task force that will look at reducing the use of diesel fuel as a means of generating electricity in remote communities.

Manitoba, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon are also participating.

There are nearly 300 communities in Canada, mostly First Nations communities, now relying on diesel generation for electricity.

The group will be chaired by Manitoba and will consist of government representatives and agencies that are responsible for electricity supply in off-grid communities.

The task force will prepare a report that examines efforts that have been or are currently underway to reduce diesel use in remote communities, among other things.

The report will also make recommendations on next steps.
