Ontario is marking Treaties Recognition Week this week with virtual events.
COVID-19 has prevented Elders and other First Nations leaders from going into classrooms to share their knowledge.
Ministry of Indigenous Affairs spokesperson Charis Ho says the purpose of a public awareness campaign is to help Ontarians recognize the importance of treaties.
“Treaties form the basis of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements. In educating people about treaty rights and obligations, we can create greater understanding and nurture these relationships.”
In 2016, Ontario passed legislation declaring the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.
