Ontario Remains A Holdout For $10-A-Day Daycare

Ontario and New Brunswick remain the lone provinces without a deal for $10-a-day daycare after Alberta signed an agreement Monday.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says an agreement is in the works but the province has three key demands.

“The first is flexibility, the second is the respect for all parents, all families deserve support from this federal government,” states Lecce.

“The third is sustainability so we do not see a program that is viable for five years and then declines in year six and parents ultimately pay the price. We want a long-term commitment.”

Lecce maintains the province is holding out for a better deal.

“We also want the federal government to pay their fair share. They contribute 2.5 percent of Ontario’s contribution of child care, but they could do much, much more and we believe a good deal is on the horizon.”

Lecce says the province is doing its part by giving parents a tax credit for child care and having a full-day kindergarten program for four and five-year-old’s.
