Ontario Sets New Health Card Deadline

If you’re still carrying around a red and white health card you’ll have to get a new one by Canada Day.

The province says there are still around 300,000 left in use, but that they’ll no longer be accepted for OHIP services as of July 1st.

Ontario has been working for over two decades to phase out the old health cards, which Health Minister Christine Elliott says are more open to fraud.

She goes on to say that even though the number of people using the old cards only represents 2% of all Ontario health cards, those who use them access up to $108 million in health care services every month.

Those with the cards should expect a letter in the mail soon letting them know it’s time for an upgrade.
