Ontario to add tariff to electricity exports on Monday

Premier Doug Ford intends to make good on a promise to add tariffs to the electricity Ontario distributes to the United States.

A 25% tariff will be applied as of Monday despite U.S. President Donald Trump again delaying implementation of U.S. tariffs until April.

It impacts Minnesota, Michigan and New York.

In an interview with CNN, Ford says he wants to see the tariffs dropped altogether and the free trade agreement between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. renegotiated.

Ford is also keeping American-made alcohol off LCBO store shelves, a move that was made on Monday in response to the tariffs kicking in then.

Trump later paused the tariffs on Canada and Mexico following separate discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Ford also met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Walz says the discussions centred around how to alleviate the impact of the tariffs.

“President Trump’s tariffs pose a serious threat to the future of trade with Canada,” says Walz in a statement.

“But while the President may not value the partnerships that contribute billions of dollars to our economy, Minnesota does.”

Walz also met with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew on the same issue.
