Ontario’s Most Northern First Nation Gets 2.5 Million From Province

Fort Severen First Nation is on the receiving end of $2.5 million.

The provincial funding is for construction of a micro grid that will allow the community to generate its own electricity using renewable energy sources.

Chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, Michael Gravelle, says the new energy infrastructure will cut the cost of diesel in half, adding the best way to provide opportunities for communities like Fort Severen is to reduce their costs.

Gravelle says the province and the community are sharing-in the cost of the project, so while funding won’t cover the full cost, it’ll allow the project to move forward in a substantial way.

He notes they’re treating the investment as a pilot project. (Photo: Caryn Ceolin)
