OPP Assessing Damage After Peaceful Protest Turns Violent

Provincial Police say they are trying to identify those involved in trashing the OPP Detachment and several police cruisers during a riot in Pikangikum.

Sergeant Peter Leon says the incident started Saturday night when an officer from the Pikangikum First Nations Police Service attempted to make an arrest.

Leon says a second person jumped in to interfere.

He notes the officer had to user a taser to subdue that individual.

A peaceful protest later that night spiralled violently out of control when the crowd grew from 20 to 200.

Leon says damage to the building is being accessed and notes repairs will need to be made before it can be utilized again.

He notes they have reinforcements in the community for patrol and have received great support from Red Lake OPP who are handling the investigation.
