Ontario Provincial Police officers will soon be carrying naloxone nasal spray while on duty.
The spray is used to help reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Acting Staff Sergeant Peter Leon says the move is in response to the number of fentanyl seizures in Ontario and the rise in overdoses elsewhere.
Leon says frontline officers will each receive two doses of the spray while those in the specialized units such as Drug Enforcement, will be provided with a personal kit.
The OPP are also making it mandatory for officers to wear protective equipment when conducting drug searches, seizures or sampling.
Leon says the move is aimed at protecting both officers and members of the public.
Training will begin this month.
Dryden Police officers will also soon be equipped and trained with the spray.
