Opposition to a Federal Government decision to close the Experimental Lakes area west of Dryden continues to ramp up.
Jill Wilkenson approached City Council last night calling on members to pass a resolution denouncing the move.
Wilkenson stated the ELA is vital to our community.
She says the ELA is the world’s top fresh water research facility and is something we should fight to keep.
Wilkenson notes roughly $100,000 is spent by ELA staff in Dryden and Kenora on a yearly basis.
Wilkenson says the ELA is an attraction to local residents and researchers from around the world.
She adds it’s also home to school tours and helps keep youth in our community.
Wilkenson stresses the research facility costs $2-million to run a year and employees 15-scientists.
She notes $3-million has been invested in the facility over the past 10-years and a new $850,000 fish lab was constructed and only used for one year.
Meantime, a rally is planned for Thursday in Dryden at Kenora MP Greg Rickford’s Constituency Office starting at 4:30.
