It’s being called a precedent setting decision.
The Canadian Labour Relations Board has ruled that officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police can be represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
P-SAC spokesperson Sharon DeSousa says they can now move forward with negotiations on a new contract.
DeSousa says they’ve been waiting to negotiate for a year and a half and officers have been frustrated with a lack of progress on several issues.
Nishnawbe-Aski Police officers are currently going through arbitration.
DeSousa says P-SAC can also begin working on outstanding grievances and issues with NAPS.
She adds that the ruling will affect other aboriginal police services across the province, including the Treaty Three Police.
