Peaceful Demonstration Being Held by Wabigoon

A peaceful protest is taking place at 2 o’clock this afternoon (Tuesday) at the Treasury Metals site near Wabigoon Lake Ojibway First Nation.
Wabigoon has attempted to seek a Memorandum of Understanding with the company for mining rights in the area.
Chief Ruben Cantin Sr. says a deadline of last Thursday to receive a response from Treasury has passed with no response.
Cantin stresses they aren’t against mining on traditional territory but notes an agreement must be reached first.
He notes prior consent needs to be given before exploration can begin.
Cantin says demonstrations will be held as Treasury has made it clear that they don’t want to move on outstanding issues.
Wabigoon officials sat down with the Province and the company earlier this month to resolve the dispute, however Cantin says no movement has occurred since.
He is asking the Province to get more involved in the dispute.
