Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 Booster Approved for Children 5-11

A new COVID-19 booster option for young children.

Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam revealed the details during a news conference today, “Health Canada has authorized the 10 micrograms Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster for children aged five to 11 years.”

She says this booster dose provides a great option to restore protection for this age group, especially for those who are at high risk for severe illness.

Dr. Tam says, “National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends that children five to 11 years of age who have an underlying medical condition and are at a high risk of severe illness due to COVID 19, including children who are immunocompromised should be offered a first booster dose of the 10 microgram BioNTech COVID-19COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after completion of a primary series of the vaccine.”

For other children in that same age group, NACI recommends a booster dose “may be offered” after completing the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dr. Tam says the COVID-19 vaccine should be a top priority in preparation for potential future waves in the fall.
