Plans to Re-Open the Steep Rock Mine

The Ministry of Natural Resources is working on a plan to re-open the former Steep Rock Mine in Atikokan.
The iron ore mine shutdown in 1980.
Project manager Dave Laderoute says they want to address the hazards and environmental concerns that now exist.
Among the issues is the water that’s filling back into the pits.
Laderoute says the water is toxic and over time, it will impact the quality of water in Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods.
