The Ontario Court of Justice has approved set fines for Sioux Lookout’s ban on plastic bags and the bylaw is now in force.
Fines will range from $100 to $150.
However, Community Development Coordinator Brian MacKinnon says they won’t be issuing fines for another year and notes that after the phase-in period fines will be levied against business owners and not members of the public.
The Municipality will also not be issuing warnings to businesses until October first to allow for the elimination of the current stock of plastic bags.
Sioux Lookout Council has reopened discussion on the bylaw that was approved last September.
MacKinnon says they have asked for additional public input and public education and awareness initiatives.
He stresses the new Council wants to be sure they have a good feeling on where the community stands on the bylaw.
