A break and enter lead to a police chase in the Nipigon area.
Ontario Provincial Police were called about a break and enter at a store in the Shuniah Township. Officers arrived at the scene around 3:30a.m where they saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle heading eastbound on Highway 11/17 west of Nipigon. When officers turned on their sirens, the suspect continued accelerating and failed to stop. Police temporarily stopped the chase for the concern of public safety.
At 6:50 a.m., officers saw the suspected vehicle traveling on Highway 17 in Pays Plat.
They laid down a spike belt as they saw the suspect approaching Schreiber. The driver continued to speed up, but the spike strip caused the car to stop near Walkers Lane road.
The occupants ran from police, but were caught several hours later.
One 26-year-old man from Fredericton, New Brunswick was released unconditionally, and the second male remains in custody.
A third male is still missing, and no description is available.
Police want to advise drivers to not pick up hitchhikers on Highway 17 near Schreiber.
