A recent University of Alberta study shows pollen is
beneficial for nutrient lacking aquatic ecosystems.
Biological Sciences Researcher Mark Graham says pollen,
leaves, and insects from the surrounding terrestrial
environment can help boreal lakes.

The study found plankton responded strongly to additions
of pollen.
Graham’s project was conducted along the shorelines of
three boreal lakes in Northwestern Ontario’s experimental
lakes area.
